The Syrian organization Social Support and Education Foundation (SSEF) builds its work on the long-standing experience of its Lebanese sister organization, the Society for Social Support and Education (SSSE). Both organizations have been engaged for many years in the fields of education, protection, and psychosocial support for particularly vulnerable people. In Saboura, a suburb of Damascus, SSEF runs a learning center as part of this project, providing children and young people with new opportunities. Many of them, aged between 8 and 25, are currently not attending school and have only limited access to education. At the learning center, they therefore receive basic extracurricular educational offerings and courses where they acquire important personal and social skills. This support helps them reintegrate into the regular education system or – especially for older youths – find their own paths to greater independence.
To achieve this, SSEF also strengthens the skills of local teachers and actively involves parents as well as community members in the work of the center. In addition, the organization establishes a referral mechanism through which children and young people in acute need can be connected to appropriate external support services. This creates a network that combines protection and education and provides young people with stability.
