The special needs school Wahat al Farah, the “Oasis of Joy,” is a private initiative in northern Lebanon. Since there are no state-run special needs schools for children with disabilities in the country and public schools are generally not prepared for inclusive education, Wahat al Farah fills an important gap. Government support has been absent for years due to the ongoing economic crisis. In recent years, we have therefore worked together with Wahat al Farah to build and equip the school building – supported by funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. Step by step, this creates a place that offers children with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorders, aged 4 to 15, a suitable and safe environment. 

Through the ongoing project, more than 90 children currently attend this school and receive instruction that is precisely tailored to their individual abilities. The teachers are trained in specialized methods and support the girls and boys with patience, empathy, and experience. Since each child brings their own strengths and challenges, the lessons are designed so that they can develop their skills at their own pace. In addition, therapeutic, practical, and creative programs are available to promote their personal development and help them live as independently as possible in the future. Early support improves their chances of developing career prospects and gaining long-term access to workshops and employment opportunities. Families also benefit from this project. They receive advice and support to better assist their children’s educational journey and their own well-being. 

At the same time, the school provides more than 20 employees with a reliable source of income and the opportunity to continue their important work. In addition, the facilities of the special school are being further expanded to provide the children with a needs-based and reliable learning environment and to make their school day easier.
